Tocando la Musica del Pueblo con Benito y Alejandro

I recently made a trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras and I had the great pleasure to play some music with my Suegro (father-in-law) Sr. Benito Alonzo and his great friend and wonderful Bajero Sr. Alejandro Galindo. They know a "monton" de songs in the Latin American traditional vein, and they gave me the great opportunity to play a set with them in the afternoon out at Benito's farm which is about a two-hour drive into the mountains from Tegucigalpa. I was given this opportunity back in 2002 when I visited, but I have since learned how to play this music pretty...

about FUNKMEISTER pt. 2

FUNKMEISTER was the first record I'd produced under my own name as artist. I have produced other LPs and/or have been in on the production of quite a few records, but this time, I decided I would take on the whole task of writing, arranging, recording, engineering, and producing in my own space, dependent on no one else to make any of the decisions, right or wrong. And it's taken me a while to feel comfortable with the result, but I think ultimately I set out what I had intended to do, which was to produce some good songs and...

Pinoy Favorites

In 1992-93 I produced an album for international rock star Mike Hanopol. Americans might not know who he is, but he is considered "The Father of Pinoy Rock". Pinoy Rock is a genre of hard rock hailing from the Philippines. Mike Hanopol is as big a star in the Philippines as the Beatles were here in america. Mike had to leave the Philippines for political reasons, and he moved here to Miami to wait out the changes in his home country's regime. While he was here, he and I worked together to create what was to be his comeback album...

shameless hype

that's what it is -- gratuitous commercialism running rampant. But I thought I'd let you know that I have created a radio spot (rather long one at about 5 minutes in length) to promote my new CD, which is shipping now. I have decided to spare the readers of this website the constant bombardment of my self-aggrandizement, by moving the funkmeister promo to the www.funkmeister.us website, where it belongs. Now that there is both a Funkmeister CD AND a Funkmeister BAND, we now have www.funkmeister.biz for the band P. R. and www.funkmeister.us for the CD promotion. So check out...

July Madness

Hi, this is just a quick post to let everybody know about a few things going on. First, as you probably heard, my CD is about to be released. It's at the pressing plant now, and hopefully nothing will go wrong. As mentioned we are accepting pre-orders and we expect to ship on August 8. And -- everyone who buys my CD from me through this website will receive a FREE DVD of my music video! (Oh, what joy, you say.) Well I think it's pretty good anyway and will certainly provide value added, for those of you that do...

My new video has been produced and is now available for listening and viewing. It is a music video for my piece entitled "Make No Mistake". It features Jesse Jones Jr. on saxophone and Joe Collado on Latin percussion and the song will be on my upcoming CD FUNKMEISTER. the video can be viewed / listened to here What can I say about this elixir, errr... movie? Well... Jay Surrell, of videobillboards.org, the guy who did the video for me, did an excellent job of not only encapsulating my regurgitation of the last eight political years in this country (which he gleaned...

Well... Jay Surrell, of videobillboards.org, the guy who did the video for me, did an excellent job of not only encapsulating my regurgitation of the last eight political years in this country (which he gleaned from the music itself) but he also took it several steps further and added some very nice touches, like the sheep running one...

Iggy Pop was my Summer Camp Counselor

I am not kidding you, it's the Gospel truth. Iggy Pop was my camp couselor. His specialty was turtle-catching, in a rowboat. He wasn't known by the name Iggy Pop in those days, however. Back then he was just Jim Osterberg. Both he and his father "Jimmy" worked at the day camp my mother sent me to. I was not raised in a rich household. However, we would not be classified as poor. My mother worked an office job and my father paid child support payments. And when the summer came along, my mother had enough money to get me out from underfoot...

Quit Cryin'!

Thelonius Fonk featuring Ronrico Morris ok Ron you can quit cryin' now   [RONRICO: If yer readin' this man, I want you to know the only reason I wrote it is because I love you and I miss you bro. We used to throw down some serious sh&t.] So what's all this "Quit Cryin" insanity all about? Well... back in the day I used to hang out with this guy named RonRico ______. Ron, if yer out there man, get in touch. RonRico is the one who actually brought that phrase into the mainstream of my conciousness. What a personality. Ron was this...

Old Tapes

When my father died last year, it sort of put a whole new perspective on my life. When I saw the writeup on him in the New York Times, and all the many others, and how they listed all his accomplishments, I sort of realised how I hadn't ever done the same thing for myself... just sort of plodding along doing what I do... which is interesting in itself. But I realised, I have this entire, gigantic body of work that I've done, that's never seen the light of day for one reason or another. (I will get into the deeper...

Captain Jarvis

I received my new copy of Captain Jarvis today... the record was not released on CD, Noel died in 1994 ya know... the only copy I had was my original vinyl disc from 1979. I used it to make an mp3 a couple of months ago, but there was still an annoying skip that's been there forever, that I wasn't able to get rid of, so I had a copy of the album digitally re-mastered by a professional service. I've ripped it to mp3, and WOW, let me tell you... I think that is one nice sounding piece of music......

Axel's on 8 Mile with Norma Jean Bell

I went down to Florida with my Thai girlfriend in May of 1982. We both got homesick after a while, so we came back up to Michigan in January of 1983. After returning to Michigan, I scored a gig with Norma Jean Bell and the All-Stars, who had a house gig at a club in Detroit called Axel's, on Eight-Mile Road -- the same Eight Mile Road that Eminem named his movie after. (I had some gigs in the same city where Eminem grew up -- Waterford township -- and I've worked with Eminem's producer, Luis Resto! But that is...
